Electric Hurdle
The Electric Hurdle is based on a particular Toba track and field event called “laser race”, where all contestants run the same path, passing over a series of hurdles…but each hurdle auto-adjusts up or down based on a bewildering set of criteria (a runner’s absolute speed, his change in speed since the last hurdle, his position in the race, the number of hurdles he’s gone around instead of going over, and more). The rules are intentionally tricky because the event is intended as a test of both physical and mental acuity. Should a racer push himself to speed up…or might that just make the next hurdle even higher? Should he overtake the racer in front of him…or should he intentionally hang back and let the other Toba go over a very high hurdle before it resets itself to the low position for the next contestant?
When the Electric Hurdle was ported over to Rocket Dogs races, the circuitry that implements the complex rules was stripped out; Electric Hurdle now only adjust their height based on the size of the Rocket Dog. Rocket Dog races provide all the mental complexity they need through the combinations of traps, shields, fuels, rockets, and other items!
