Irish Setter
The Irish Setter is an intelligent and athletic dog … but somewhat bumbling, too. The Toba Rocket Dog trainers first realized this in week seven of the training program (the first four weeks were training in basic obedience and commands, week five was racecourse etiquette and rules, week six was use of spikes, and week seven was use of traps.) Most of the other dogs got the concept of traps right away, and could jet around the training course, set a Plasma Net or a Portable Hole in their wake, and make life difficult for the other dogs hot on their heels…and the Irish Setters could too! …but the problem was that the Irish Setters were slightly more likely to bumble into their own traps on the next circuit of the trace track.
The trainers worked with the Irish Setters to understand the issue. Vision tests were performed by opticians from the Society of Gaikvo, but the Irish Setters could see just fine. Intelligence tests were redone, but the dogs were smart enough, had object permanence, and could remember where they’d set the traps. More research was done before one young Toba trainer thought to ask how effective the traps set by Irish Setters were against other dogs, at which point the trainers realized that the traps were tricking other dogs at a much higher rate. That’s when the Toba realized that the core issue was that Irish Setters were naturals at using camouflage and concealment to make their traps even harder to avoid!
